What the eff is a Mid-life Crisis is anyway?!
Sometime in your 40s or 50s, you might have looked around your life and like that Talking Head’s song, wondered - who’s house is this? Who am I married to? How did I get here? What happened to those things I wanted to do? Or even, I have this beautiful house, all the things and I am disconnect to my partner, my kids hate me and what the fuck I am doing?
Sure you can choose to give up, just watch television and drink beer until you die or you can make the challenging decision to deal with your shit and create a life where you are thriving, where you can say, I did it! I fucking chased my dreams and I made some of them happen or at least I freaking tried!
How do I know If I'm having a Midlife Crisis!?
Here are some signs that you may be experiencing a midlife crisis:
- Life is boring and dull. You may feel dissatisfied with your career, relationships, or overall life.
- You wonder about the choices you have made? Maybe you regret some missed opportunities, made some mistakes or find yourself fantasizing about old partners
- Time is ticking. How much time do you have left? What if you don’t get to do the things you really wanted to do
- Are you considering or fantasizing about doing things out of your comfort zone or even radically different ideas that you can’t believe you are thinking about.
- Are you feeling anxious about your health or facing some real difficult health challenges and tis making you afraid
- Are you doing things that are potentially dangerous? Are you drinking in excess, experimenting with drugs, having an affair?

You can do nothing, but this is an opportunity to grow and transform. If you are willing to do some self examination and proactive steps to address where you are in your life, here are a few options to help you thrive during this midlife awakening
- Take a look at yourself, do some self examination. Reflect on your values, your goals and your priorities. If they are not in alignment with your truest desires, you will need to align your choices with your values and your words with your values. Learn to speak your truth
- Get some help - Talk to friends, families or a therapist about your feelings and concerns. If you are struggling with how to communicate, seek some help. You will feel less alone and it will give you the opportunity to connect with your feelings, even though that might be terrifying..
- Try new things - Embrace that sense of adventure that you have been longing for, reconnect to your dreams and desires, take up new hobbies, travel to places you have always dreamed about, change your career.
- Take care of your health - prioritize your physical and mental health by engaging in regular exercise, take a look at your diet and do stress-reducing activities such as yoga or meditation.
- Create some goals - create goals that are connected to your values and the life you truly wish you are living and make the steps to make it happen. This will help you regain a sense of purpose and direction in life. Many small steps are steps in the right direction.
- Connect with people - find new social connections with people who have similar interests and values. Creating meaningful relationships can help you during times of change and finding friends with similar interests and values can help you feel like you belong.
With the right support and strategies in place, you can thrive during this time of change and uncertainty.
